Fall festival recap and fall events

As the leaves fall and the weather turns cooler, fall takes full form around us. With fall comes fall festivities. With fall festivities came the SA Fall Festival that was on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 8 p.m.

This event had an outfit contest among students and staff as the main attraction. Intricate outfits filled the Thunderdome. This year’s students included smurfs, Wizard of Oz characters, several pirates, and a significant amount of Disney representation. The contest was split into three groups: singles, doubles and groups. Christine Sturgill took the singles competition with a rendition of Post Malone; Chris Johnson and Patrick Birlew took the doubles round with a sheriff and orange jumpsuit prisoner; and Yve Ellis Yahav, Emma Bermeo and Ethan Yahn won the group competition with the trio from “How to Train Your Dragon.”

As college students, however, buying a whole costume can be financially impossible. Thankfully, located right here in Lincoln, NE is the state’s largest costume library. Housing over 40,000 costumes, the Nebraska Wesleyan Elder Theatre Center costume library has almost every piece you can think of. Whether it’s just you or a massive combination of your friend group, mutual friends and acquaintances dressing as the cast of “Top Gun: Maverick,” go check it out. Nov. 1 is the time to start planning for next year anyway.

If you were busy or out of town last Saturday, there are plenty of other activities in the area to get you feeling the spirit of the season. There is a mystery detective show on Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Cornhusker Hotel. Maybe the fall season brings about…mystery and puzzle events? If that’s not quite your scene, you can see the Coco Live-to-Film concert Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Lied Center.

Some people, however, already have their sights set on the real reason for the season, Christmas. A holiday of humility and stillness … or pride and stinginess – depending on what your family traditions are. The Hallmark movie channel has already started up their arsenal of Christmas movies. So, if you’re needing a dose of big-city-girl-finds-herself-landing-a-job-in-a-small-town-where-she-learns-lessons-about-humility-and-the-Christmas-spirit-all-while-finding-the-man-she-didn’t-know-she-needed, Hallmark has many options for you.
