As the school year inches closer to its end, thoughts of summer employment start to take center stage for many Union College students. Maria Dos Santos, director of the Reiner Wellness Center asks, “What do you want to do for work this summer?” The quest for the perfect summer job can be daunting, but Reiner Wellness Center is offering a solution that not only gives the opportunity for an exciting summer gig, but also equips participants with essential life-saving skills.

This summer, consider becoming a certified lifeguard through Reiner Wellness Center's lifeguard certification class.

The certification class is scheduled for Feb. 23 and 25, March 2 and 3. Participants must attend all four days to receive their certification. Designed to prepare students for a summer spent poolside or beachside, the comprehensive program covers a range of crucial skills, ensuring participants are ready to respond confidently in emergency situations.

One of the key focuses of the lifeguard certification class is teaching students the fundamentals of first aid. Participants will learn how to assess and address injuries, providing vital care until professional medical help arrives. The program also includes CPR training for the professional rescuer, ensuring that lifeguards are well prepared to handle cardiac emergencies with precision and confidence.

An essential component of the course is the instruction on how to utilize an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Lifeguards will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to operate this life saving device further enhancing their ability to respond effectively in critical situations.

Lifeguard rescues are at the heart of the training, as students will be taught various techniques for safely and efficiently assisting individuals in distress. From water-based rescues to managing panicked swimmers, participants will gain hands-on experience to build their confidence and competence in real-world scenarios.

In addition to the specific skills taught, the lifeguard certification class places a strong emphasis on emergency response. Lifeguards will learn how to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations, ensuring a swift and effective response when every second counts.

Beyond the invaluable skills acquired, becoming a certified lifeguard opens the door to exciting summer job opportunities. Whether it is at a local pool, beach or community center, lifeguards play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of others while enjoying a fulfilling and active summer employment experience.
