One of the best things about college is meeting new people. Friendships made in college can play a significant role in your academic success by reducing your stress level, providing emotional support and boosting your happiness. These important relationships can last a lifetime.

Here are a few tips you can use to make long lasting friendships that start in college.

Don’t rush into anything

During your freshman year you may feel pressured to make friends because you don’t want to be alone. This mentality can get you into toxic friendships, so take your time and find people who you connect with.

Remember that it’s okay if you don’t click with everyone. What matters most is that you find people you enjoy spending time with.

Make time to socialize

School work can keep you busy. In order to get through all the stress, it’s essential you make the time to have some fun. One of the best ways to do this is to get out of the dorm and socialize. This can be anything from going out to eat, bowling or just exploring downtown Lincoln.

These are great bonding moments to make memories with people you care about.

Keep an open mind

Never judge a person right away. Get to know them first to see what they’re all about. You may surprise yourself and find people you’d never have thought you’d connect with. Those people may turn out to be some of your closest friends.

Find people who share similar interest

When you find people who enjoy the same things as you conversations are easier and hanging out becomes much more comfortable. When you find friends who have the same or similar interest as you, you don’t have to pretend to be something you’re not.

Search for people who understand the true you

Friendships are something that should come naturally. You shouldn’t feel like you have to walk on eggshells when you’re hanging out with people. When you are comfortable around your friends, you can embrace your true self.

Friends are an essential part of our lives. Take time to branch in your college experience and don’t be afraid to make new friends. The bonds you make with people now can last a lifetime, so make those friendships purposeful and spend time developing those relationships.
